Sitting at a mid-point between formalism and expressionism, Berlin-based designer Angela Lorenz' solutions are often systems-inspired yet each allows enough flexibility for individuality and creativity of approach.
Her quietly understated solution for Mille Plateaux's first Ritornell series is an elegant approach which simultaneously embraces both uniformity and idiosyncracy. It is a subtle take on a modernist solution which quietly reflects the worlds of data and ASCII systems.
Lorenz stresses that while her work may be systems-based it refuses to be systems-restricted. Her recent covers for Kit Clayton's Orthlorng Musork label for German musician Stephan Mathieu (as Full Swing) extend this philosophy. Despite the fact that each cover is derived from the same source - a single pixelated image file (itself the result of an accident) - each cover retains its own unique sense of identity.
In her own words: "The system is not the aim, merely the basis; a map or set of co-ordinates which defines or acts as a guiding principle and nothing more."
