This piece is made from recordings made in Peru in 2001 - mostly around Lima, mostly around Christmas. The fireworks started on Christmas Eve, which struck me as an odd way to celebrate Christmas, but they seemed to stick with it.
Besides the various strange Peruvian animals, and the normal Peruvian city sounds which are equally full of life, one of my favorite things to listen to there were the amateur bands that got together to play for various festivals and religous events - it seems everybody can play something…
Jonathan Segel is an accomplished musician and makes music out of sounds of all sorts. He has composed music for film and dance and has toured throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia performing with a number of bands, most notably Camper Van Beethoven, Sparklehorse and Cracker. In addition to his own bands he has also worked with avant garde musician Eugene Chadbourne.
Besides running his own record label, Magnetic (www.magneticmotorworks.com), he has worked as a sound designer for film with Academy Award winning sound designer Dane A. Davis at Danetracks in Los Angeles, and has been a principal composer for Nesting Dolls, the Los Angeles-based dance company for the past nine years.
He likes to listen.
